Driving AND lecture classes meet every week. Therefore, all students must be available to commit themselves to three hours total each week: 90 minutes of in-car instruction AND 90 minutes of classroom lecture. Students and parent/guardians should thoroughly discuss this commitment and attendance policy prior to registering for DE program. MV-278 (5 Hour Certificates) and MV-285 (Certificate of Completions) documents must be kept in a secure location. Replacement certificates from the DMV are a lengthy process.

What is the absence policy?

Per New York State, a student must attend ALL 48 hours of the program in order to receive the “Student Certificate of Completion” (MV 285). West Islip School District is forbidden by NYS law from issuing the MV-285 to anyone who has not met the minimum attendance requirements. Students must make arrangements to attend all classes. It is the student's responsibility to make sure absences will NOT occur. Parental notes DO NOT excuse absences from classes. A Certificate of Completion will NOT be issued to ANY student in the event of missed classes.

MV-285 Certificate of Completion's will be in the mail within 1 month after the last class to students who successfully complete and pass the DE program.
