Fourth graders at Oquenock recently spent a day in “surgery.” Adorned in surgical gowns, hats, masks and gloves, the students were given patient files as well as post-operative reports to showcase their nonfiction text feature strategies. For this activity, students were asked to read a case study about a patient, diagnose their concern and explore magazines, articles and books to find the text feature that would fix the problem. They then wrote post-op reports on each patient with an explanation of the purpose of each text feature and how it would benefit the patient. Principal Jack Maniscalco even got in on the fun, joining the fourth grade surgical team.
