High school seniors Carly Cenci and Joseph Costantino were recently named winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone awards, exemplifying exceptional physical performance, character and citizenship.

This annual award is given by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to recognize the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school graduating class. The criteria include attainment of at least a 3.0 or B overall grade point average, an A or 90 in physical education and health classes, outstanding character in both classroom and school, exceptional leadership in the school environment, and status as a physical fitness role model for other students.

Cenci, who competes at an exceptional level on the West Islip basketball and lacrosse teams, is also a member of the school’s National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National World Language Honor Society, National Business Honor Society, Art Club, SAFE Club and Future Business Leader of America Club. She volunteers with Challenger Athletics. Cenci plans to attend Bucknell University in the fall, where she will play lacrosse.

Costantino, an inspirational leader on the West Islip varsity football and lacrosse teams, is also a member of the school’s National Honor Society. He volunteers at a local church, assisting special needs children in basketball, and donated his time working with children in the pediatric unit at Good Samaritan Hospital. Costantino plans to attend Fairfield University in the fall, where he will play lacrosse.
