Second-graders at Bellew recently explored astronomy via Franklyn Branley’s “The Big Dipper,” the story of a girl who can point out different constellations. Guided by teacher Paul Pekurney, the students examined this informational narrative, learning about the two Dippers and how they have been used historically for navigation.  The reading activity coincided with a trip to West Islip High School’s planetarium, where the children learned about the phases of the moon and the constellations.
