West Islip High School seniors in the childhood education program toured the West Islip Union Free School District elementary buildings before starting their work study program at the end of the month.

On Sept. 16, the students, along with teacher Nancy Silvestrini and transition coordinator Ryan Vollmuth, were led on a tour of Manetuck Elementary School by Principal Vanessa Williams. They will soon be placed in a student-teaching role at one of the district’s four elementary schools from Monday to Friday throughout the school year.

“These high school students who are looking for a career working with younger children now have the chance to translate the skills they learned into a real classroom setting,” Vollmuth said. Many of the high school students have completed courses in child development, early childhood education and advanced child study and intend to pursue a career in education as part of their postsecondary plans. They have also worked in the district’s in-house Little Lions preschool program.
