Research Institute Experience students from West Islip High School spent two weeks this summer at Brookhaven National Laboratory. They learned about the facilities available at BNL, including the National Synchrotron Light Source II. The NSLS-II is one of the most advanced synchrotrons in the world where students can use X-rays and infrared light to analyze the elemental makeup and structure of materials at nanoscale resolution.
West Islip High School student researchers collaborated with students from Shoreham-Wading River High School and Westhampton Beach High School to design experiments that analyzed microplastics found in carrots and potatoes, oyster shells, and seaweed. Students will use the skills they learned this summer to design research projects in collaboration with BNL scientists throughout this school year.
