The high school’s valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2020 are Grace Gallagher and Courtney Metzger, respectively.
Gallagher, who earned a weighted GPA of 106.166, serves as vice president of the school’s Science Honor Society and is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. A four-year violinist in the West Islip Chamber Ensemble, she earned a perfect NYSSMA score for the last three years. She has been a member of the school’s kickline team for four years and serves as team captain. Gallagher is also a member of the school’s Thirst Project and serves as a peer tutor. During her free time, she mentors physically disabled children by teaching and choreographing dance for them, and performs and teaches as a member of the West Islip Creative Arts program. Gallagher will attend Fairfield University, majoring in biology.
Metzger, who earned a weighted GPA of 105.59, is an AP Scholar with Honor and Seal of Biliteracy candidate. She serves as co-president of the school’s National Honor Society and vice president and treasurer of the school’s DECA club. She is also a member of the National English Language Honor Society, National Foreign Language Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, New York State Business & Marketing Honor Society, Mathletes, Science Olympiad team, Thirst Project and Century Club. Metzger earned the American Chemical Society Award, Long Island Business Teachers Association third-place prize in accounting, and Student of the Month honors from the high school’s art, business and math departments. As a member of the varsity field hockey team, she was honored with the 2018 Unsung Hero award and 2019 NYSPHSSA Scholar-Athlete recognition. Metzger will attend Stony Brook University, majoring in health science.
