Fifth grade entrepreneurs at Oquenock Elementary School held a bead bonanza in March outside the school’s cafeteria. The fifth grade students have been working on creating their small businesses over the last few months.

Students have been applying math skills, engaging in planning and meeting deadlines, budgeting money and materials, sharpening their persuasive writing, creating advertisements, collaborating with team members and incorporating design and video technology. The fifth graders marketed their beaded products for purchase to students, faculty and staff during the bead bonanza, held during the lunch periods. The businesses visited the kindergarten classes personally for a more specialized consumer experience.

Following the two-day market, the business owners had the opportunity to evaluate their team decisions, improve upon their model and build their inventory. A second marketplace was held on April 19 and 20. All companies will be donating their profits to a charity of their choice.
