For the past three years, students in Justin DeMaio’s fifth grade class at Bayview Elementary School have been named winners in PSEG’s annual “I Am EM-Powered” public service announcement contest. The contest, now in its fourth year, is open to students in grades 4-8 across Long Island and the Rockaways.

Members of PSEG visited the classroom on April 19 to interview students about their creative process in creating the PSA videos. “We have had winners the past three years, and I am hoping for some more this year,” Mr. DeMaio said. “Since we have had winners, PSEG came in to interview the students to see their process in working and creating their PSAs.”

According to PSEG, there are usually hundreds of submissions received for the annual contest. Those entries are narrowed down by educators based on the rubric before heading to the final round for review. Topics range from energy efficiency to littering to protecting the environment and oceans. The PSAs are 45 seconds in length, and the submission deadline was April 21. Ten winning teams will be announced on a live Zoom call with the classes in June.
