May 1 was recognized as College Awareness Day at the West Islip School District. The date is known as the official “decision day” for those students headed to college in the fall. Throughout the district, students, teachers and staff dressed in their college shirts and celebrated post-secondary plans.

Elementary and middle school students learned about options post-graduation – including college, military or specialty training – as well as the importance of being a lifelong learner. At the district’s middle schools, there was a door-decorating contest held in each of the advisory classes. Students showed off their creative side while learning about different post-secondary options.

Teachers at West Islip High School spoke to students about the impact college had on their lives. Members of the Class of 2023 gathered in the gymnasium for a group photo in their college shirts. Seniors wrote their name and college on a pawprint. All the pawprints were included on the 2023 Decision Day banner.
