West Islip School District’s English as a new language department recently celebrated and honored cultural and language diversities. The secondary English as a new language students in grades 6-12 visited elementary English as a new language students at Oquenock Elementary School. The students introduced themselves in their native languages and taught each other how to say various greetings. Following their introductions, students collaborated with peers from their native country to complete an “I Am From” poem project. In groups, students worked on hand-shaped posters to visually display their poetry. Students then read their poems aloud; there were 19 different countries represented this year. The projects are now on display at the West Islip Public Library for the community to enjoy.
