Fourth grade classes at Bellew recently visited the historic Fire Island Lighthouse, located on the barrier beach of Fire Island.

Students took a nature walk to the boathouse and lens house and learned about the vegetation native to the area. They also participated in a demonstration of the first U.S. Lifesaving Service, where they reenacted a vintage lifesaving experience. The fourth graders also had the opportunity to climb 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse tower and learn about the demanding life of a lighthouse keeper. Some students were even able to see the New York City skyline from the tower.
