Ms. Kroll’s BNL Spark students recently presented their research to scientists at the National Synchrotron Light Source II annual users meeting. Abigail Lam, Evamaria Crosley, and Michael Hazelton took first place in the meeting’s poster contest for their work. Some of their research included:
* Emily Podolska explored the mineral composition of herbal medicines using X-ray powder diffraction.
* Emilia Miranda investigated microplastics in farmed versus wild caught shrimp.
* Julia Kennedy established a library of spectra from plastics for microplastic identification.
* Ryan Deegan and Isabella Tussie developed a procedure using C. elegans worms as cancer models with infrared microspectroscopy, winning second place in the poster contest.
* Abigail Lam, Evamaria Crosley, and Michael Hazelton led a project on microplastic composition in Long Island waterways, taking first place in the poster contest.
They will present their research at the West Islip STEM Symposium on June 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the high school.
