West Islip Seniors Named Suffolk Zone Winners

West Islip High School seniors Carley Sgueglia and Chris Piropato were recently honored as outstanding physical education students by the Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The annual award recognizes senior students who best exemplify exceptional physical performance, scholarship, character, leadership and citizenship.

Carley has distinguished herself as an exceptional student-athlete at West Islip High School while taking Advanced Placement and college-level courses and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Science Honor Society and National World Language Honor Society. As the captain of the varsity soccer team in 2023, Carley’s leadership and skill led the team to success, earning her recognition at the All-State level. In addition to soccer and her volunteer work, she has been a standout performer on the varsity lacrosse team, where she has been a three-year starter and played a pivotal role in securing the 2023 county championship. Carley will be attending Elon University, where she will compete in Division I lacrosse while pursuing her academic aspirations.

Chris maintains an impressive 3.8 GPA in challenging Advanced Placement and college-level courses. He is a three-sport scholar-athlete and a distinguished member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and National Math Honor Society. His commitment to academic excellence is complemented by his involvement in the school band and his dedication to community service. As a three-year varsity starter and the 2023 captain of the football team, Chris’ leadership and talent propelled the team to success. His prowess on the field earned him recognition as First Team All-State and the prestigious Bob Colotta Award for the top linebacker in Suffolk County. In addition to football, Chris has showcased his athleticism on the basketball court and baseball diamond, where he served as captain twice. He will continue his football career at Endicott College, where he will pursue his academic interests.
