Fire Safety at Udall Road

In recognition of National Fire Safety Month, students at Udall Road Middle School participated in a fire safety assembly on Oct. 9 designed to educate and empower them with practical life-saving knowledge. The presentation, led by members of the West Islip Fire Department, focused on preventing household fires and responding safely in emergency situations.
A major topic of this year’s program was the growing dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in everyday items like smartphones, e-bikes, scooters, laptops, and wireless earbuds. Firefighters explained how improper charging, damaged batteries, or the use of incompatible chargers can lead to overheating and dangerous fires.
Firefighters also stressed the life-saving importance of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Students were reminded to test smoke alarms monthly and to talk with their families about installing alarms on every floor of the home and inside bedrooms.
