The Members of the Board of Education

Board of Education Information

The Board of Education has, in all respects the superintendence, management and control of the educational affairs of the District and has all the powers necessary to exercise these powers expressly granted to it by the laws of New York State and the Commissioner of Education.

The seven members of the school board are elected by the people of the district. They serve without pay for three-year terms.

Student Representation to the Board of Education

At the heart of our district’s leadership, we believe student perspectives are essential to informed decision-making. In addition to our seven elected trustees, the Board of Education includes:

  • One Ex-Officio Student Representative: A non-voting member who attends Board of Education meetings to share insights and feedback directly from the student body.

  • One Student Alternate: Ensuring consistent representation and continuity in our collaborative process.

While these representatives do not cast formal votes, their contributions are vital. They serve as a primary bridge between the Board and the student body, ensuring that our policies and programs reflect the needs and aspirations of the students we serve.

Noah Butler

Student Representative to the Board of Education

Noah is driven by a genuine desire to give back to the West Islip community that has always supported him. An active athlete and student leader, he wanted the student rep role so he could “be a voice for others and really give back to the community that’s given so much to me.” Noah’s goals center on inclusion and authentic student voice. “I wanted to really give a voice to everybody... I wasn’t trying to put myself in the spotlight... I was just a messenger.” Noah sees the position as a way to spread awareness about what’s happening in school and ensure quieter students have their voices heard.

He credits teachers and staff for helping him grow and pursue passions beyond the classroom, naming Ms. Barry, Mr. Tunstead, Mr. Chizik, and especially Mr. Gilmartin as important influences.

His advice to other students considering leadership roles is to lead from their hearts. “Don’t look at it as an obligation, look at it as a passion,” and seek out work that feels meaningful.

Veronica Ramos

Alternate Student Representative to the Board of Education

Veronica is committed to making sure every student feels heard and included. She stepped into the Student Rep alternate role to “give voice to students who sometimes feel unsure about speaking up, especially minority students.” Veronica stays connected by speaking with clubs, working with senior-class peers, and checking in with advisors of the lower grades so she can bring concerns and ideas from across the student body to the Board.

She values authentic leadership and encourages others to be themselves: “Don’t be afraid to be yourself. If you’re a true leader, you’re going to be yourself and allow other people to also be themselves while guiding them on the correct path.” Veronica credits her robotics coach Mr. Baranec for helping her overcome “imposter syndrome” by teaching that “showing your mistakes and growing from them” is an essential part of being a good leader.

School Board Recognition Week

In celebration of School Board Recognition Week, the West Islip School District administration recognized the hard work and dedication of its board members. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paul Romanelli, thanked the board members for their support and presented them with a certificate that read “In recognition of your tireless dedication, service and enduring commitment to the students, faculty, and community members of the West Islip Union Free School District”.
