Kindergarten Pumpkin Investigations

Kindergarten students at Bayview Elementary School recently put their observation and investigation skills to the test during a hands-on pumpkin exploration activity in the STEM Lab. As part of their fall learning unit, students examined pumpkins up close – describing how they look, feel and smell – while learning to use descriptive language to share their observations.
After examining the outside, students had the chance to explore the inside of the pumpkins, feeling the seeds and pulp and discussing textures. The activity encouraged curiosity and sensory learning while helping students build vocabulary and scientific thinking skills.
To conclude the lesson, STEM Lab teacher Ms. Caufield conducted a special pumpkin experiment. Students made predictions about what would happen when yeast, water and dish soap were added to the pumpkin, then observed the exciting results firsthand.
This engaging activity combined science and seasonal fun – sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for learning among the young scientists.
