Bayview Fourth Graders Bring Science to Life with Volcanoes

Fourth graders at Bayview Elementary School recently brought their science studies to life through an exciting hands-on STEM lab experience. After learning about different types of rock formations and how the Earth’s surface changes over time, students traveled to the school’s STEM lab to conduct their own volcanic eruption experiment.
In the classroom, students explored how rocks form through processes such as cooling, heat and pressure, and sedimentation. They also studied natural forces — including weathering, erosion and volcanic activity — that shape and reshape the land around us.
To deepen their understanding, students applied these concepts in an engaging, interactive lab. Working in small groups, they built model volcanoes and used carefully measured materials to simulate a real volcanic eruption. As their volcanoes bubbled and overflowed, students observed how lava flow can create new landforms and impact the surrounding environment.
The experiment allowed students to combine scientific knowledge with creativity, problem solving and teamwork. By modeling a volcanic eruption, they gained a clearer understanding of geologic changes and saw firsthand how Earth is constantly transforming.
