Kindergartners Build Phonics Skills

Kindergarten students in Ms. Connors’ class at Paul J. Bellew Elementary school have been hard at work practicing C-V-C (consonant-vowel-consonant) words through the Fundations phonics program.
Students listened carefully for beginning, middle and ending sounds, holding up the matching letter cards to show what they heard. Then “Mama Echo,” the class’s beloved Fundations owl, flew over each child as the class blended the sounds together to read each word aloud. The activity allowed students to move, participate and strengthen their early reading skills in a fun and engaging way.
In a second activity, students used the Smartboard to look at pictures representing C-V-C words. They identified the correct beginning, middle and ending letters to match each picture. The class was filled with excitement and joyful learning as students built confidence in their phonics skills!
