Third Grade Lesson Combines Art and Literacy

Third grade students at Oquenock Elementary School celebrated the culmination of their arts and letters module with an engaging and creative book-end experience that brought learning to life. As part of the celebration, guest artist Ms. Rabin visited each third grade class to introduce students to the art of rubber stamp making.
Using “The Great Wave” as inspiration, students explored the artwork and imagined what kinds of sea creatures might live within the scene. They began by tracing their rubber blocks and sketching original designs, then learned how to carefully transfer their drawings onto the rubber surface. With guidance, students used carving tools to create their own custom stamps.
Once completed, students applied paint to their stamps and pressed them onto paper, revealing vibrant sea creatures inspired by the iconic artwork. The hands-on activity allowed students to combine art history, creativity, and fine motor skills while reinforcing concepts from their module.
