Third Grade Assembly Brings Module to Life

To launch their new reading module, A New Home, third grade students at Oquenock Elementary School participated in a meaningful and engaging assembly that brought learning beyond the classroom. Family members were invited to share their personal immigration experiences, helping students gain a deeper understanding of the journeys many families take when coming to the United States.
During the presentation, guests spoke about their transitions from their home countries to America, offering insight into the challenges and opportunities they encountered along the way. They also shared traditions, cultural practices and perspectives on similarities and differences in schools and daily life.
Through these firsthand stories, students were able to make authentic connections to their reading curriculum while building empathy and appreciation for diverse experiences. The assembly served as a powerful reminder that storytelling can foster understanding, connection and a greater sense of community.
